Do you intend to vote in the 2026 elections? Here you can find answers to some frequently asked questions about how the elections work, who is entitled to vote, and when the results are published.

  • When will I receive my voting card?

    You will get your voting card when early voting starts at the latest. For the 2026 elections, that’s 26 August. If you have a digital mailbox, you will receive your voting card digitally. If you don’t have a digital mailbox, we will send your voting card to you on paper by post.

    If you’re a Swedish citizen living abroad, you will receive your voting card earlier. We will start issuing international voting cards from 7 July onwards.

  • When are the next elections to the Riksdag?

    Election day is 13 September 2026 for elections to the Riksdag and regional and municipal councils.

    You can vote in these elections between 26 August and 13 September. If you’re abroad, you can send a postal vote from 30 July at the earliest.

  • Where can I vote early?

    You can vote early at any early voting location in Sweden between 26 August and 13 September. Details of all early voting locations in Sweden (including their addresses, opening times and accessibility information) will be published here on val.se during the second quarter of 2026.

  • What will we vote for in the 2026 elections?

    In the 2026 elections, we will elect the politicians we want to represent us in the following assemblies:

    • the Riksdag, which decides on laws and determines the central government budget
    • the regional councils, which manage the provision of healthcare and public transport
    • the municipal councils, which take decisions relating to schools, care for the elderly, and many other local matters
  • When are the election results published?

    The preliminary results will appear on val.se on election night.

    We will publish the final results when the vote count has been completed, which would normally be one to two weeks after the elections.

  • How do I find out where to vote?

    The address details of your local voting location and nearby early voting locations are stated on your voting card.

    Alternatively, you can search for voting location details on val.se. We’ll publish details of all voting locations, their addresses and opening times during the second quarter of 2026.

  • Can I vote if I live abroad?

    Yes. You can either send a postal vote, or vote at an embassy or consulate. If you live in a country other than Sweden, you need to register every 10 years to remain on the electoral roll.
