Certain electoral decisions may be contested by appeal to the Election Review Board. These are:
Both individuals and parties may appeal against the election result if they consider that the Election Authority or any other authority has acted incorrectly.
The appeal must be received by the authority responsible for the decision not later than ten days after the announcement of the election result. The Election Authority announces the result of the Riksdag election by means of a notice in the Swedish Official Gazette. The results of municipal and county council elections are considered announced when the County Administrative Board’s record of the final count is complete.
The Election Review Board may declare an election void and order a new election, either nationally or in a specific constituency, if an irregularity may be presumed to have affected the outcome of the election. If the errors can be rectified by means of a new count or some other minor measure, the Election Review Board may instead instruct the decision-making authority to take the appropriate corrective action.
