The Swedish electoral system includes elections and referendums. The Elections Act, the Local Government Act, the Act on National Referendums, the Elections Ordinance and a number of other laws govern the conduct of elections and referendums.
The electoral system in Sweden is based on proportional representation. As a result, the composition of political assemblies in Sweden reflects the composition and political views of the electorate.
General Riksdag elections, together with elections to the municipal- and the county council assemblies, are held on the second Sunday in September every four years.
