Areas of responsibilty

In accordance with the election results, The Election Authority is responsible for:

  • distribution of seats between the parties in Parliament and also the 18 Swedish seats in the European Parliament
  • appointment of the members in Parliament as well as the 18 Swedish members in the European Parliament.

The Election Authority is also responsible for:

  • development and support of the computerised part of the electoral system
  • distribution of the preliminary and the final electoral results on the Internet
  • information regarding when, where, and how voting is to be carried out
  • production of manuals and training as guidance to The County Administrative Boards (regional authorities) and to the municipal Election Committees (local authorities)
  • production of electoral rolls and voting cards, ballot papers, envelopes, forms etc. used for the elections.

The Election Authority's Board

The Election Authority is governed by a Board consisting of a chairman and four members. Discussions on Swedish democracy has lately been more and more focused on the planning and carrying out of elections. Decisions made and measures taken by The Election Authority are important parts of the electoral process. By its composition, The Board will guarantee a wide political and civic support.
